Either as part of the licensure process, or as part of securing investment money, you'll need to create cannabis operating plans and standard operating procedures. This is to prove that you have enough experience, and have put enough thought into exactly how the facility will run once it's set up. We've seen many sets of state and local cannabis regulations and ordinances at this point, and they are all fairly similar. When you are applying for a license, an operating plan has a limited definition that covers the topics identified in the regulations of the applicable jurisdiction. That's usually what applicants need when they contact us. The broader definition of a cannabis operating plan is the on-site manual that will be used once you are in operation and need an up-to-date set of protocols for your workers to reference. The more limited pre-license operating plans should collectively add up to somewhere between 50-150 pages, whereas the post-license cannabis SOP set could be as many as 300 pages long, because it will go into great detail about little things like how to calibrate a pH meter, or how to check and reset digital thermometers.

Jennifer Martin, M. A. is a veteran commercial cannabis grower from the San Francisco Bay Area and regular speaker at west coast industry events. She is a professional writer and consultant to pre-license and post-license cannabis businesses in North America, Europe, Australia and Africa.
Jennifer started out as a flower producer and moved to Amsterdam in the mid 90's, to learn commercial growing. She returned in late 1996, when medical marijuana became legal in California. She won the SF Bay Area Cannabis Cup in 1998 with the cultivar Bubbleberry from Sagarmatha seeds and then went on to be the biggest clone producer in Northern California. She was a wholesale supplier to Berkeley Patients Group and Harborside, as well as many other Bay Area dispensaries until she moved to Hawaii in 2012.
Jennifer completed her Master's Degree in Philosophy in 2003 from California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She has written for several cannabis magazines, including SF Evergreen, Marijuana Venture, Maximum Yield, and Northwest Grower's Magazine. She has been a speaker at over 20 west coast cannabis industry events.
